How the real impact of the Welsh Government energy strategy equates to the crumbs in your pizza box
Each month the International Energy Agency publishes a mass of data on world energy production, analysed across a range of different factors including country and energy source. From the impressive IEA data portal its clear to see that the UK has over the last few years made huge strides in reducing its power generation carbon footprint.
Based on the January 2024 data the UK represented just 0.96% of overall World power related carbon emissions. According to the UK Department of Energy Security and Net Zero, Wales accounts for around 11% of UK power related carbon omissions. That puts Wales at a 0.106% share of world emissions . To be clear: that is one tenth of one percent of the global problem.
For those who have a problem imaging what one tenth of one percent actually looks like, then can I suggest that you order a 11″ Domino’s pizza, as shown in the picture above. If you take the pizza to represent overall world power related carbon emissions, then the Welsh share of the problem is the red dot shown on the left edge of the pizza circumference.
Of course, if you are serious about addressing the power related carbon emissions issue, then you will need to speak to the Chinese, American and Indian governments , who in total generate 72% of world emissions. Yet the Welsh Government continues to broadcast the ideological line that there is a climate crisis to solve in Wales, and will happily trash most of rural Wales in an act that will have absolutely no impact on the global problem.
Unfortunately, the Labour Party has never had a problem with data and science that contradict their ideological message, and so we are left with the worst form of ‘virtue signalling’ – actions from a political class that salve their consciences, cause misery for those impacted, but do nothing to solve the real world problem.
So the next time you consider a Labour party political message, think about the crumbs in the bottom of your pizza box – because that’s about as effective they are at solving any real world problem.
